Planning:

1. Your interest: 80% senior school student that included me at one point of time, wanted to join the engineering because my parents wanted me to and my friends were doing the same. But the question is “Are you interested in doing engineering”? If yes then make a list why? And make sure you are self satisfied.

2. Ask a counsellor: I know most of you would not be able to find it yourself. My suggestion: Go to a counsellor. These guys are experts and have helped many like you over the years. College education is something that costs a lot so it’s not a bad move to even pay a little fee if that can help you achieve your dream.

3. Don’t aim IIT's: Planning for IIT’s, sounds good more than it actually is. There are numerous colleges beyond IIT’s that offer great education so make a list accordingly and study according to plan.

4. Mock tests: Give mock tests before giving AIEEE or JEE examination this will prepare you for time management.

Short listing:

1. Research: Research for the best colleges in and around your city, state or country for engineering, over the internet.google is the best way to search for e.g. If you are looking for colleges in Punjab search for keywords like engineering in Punjab, engineering colleges in Punjab or engineering college in Punjab. You can add more keywords similar to that.

2. Checking: After you have got some result, check colleges for various facilities like environment, infrastructure, hostel, transportation & faculty. Since AICTE has made it mandatory for all colleges to disclose these details they are easily available on their website.

3. Communicating: Don’t hesitate download brochures, exchange e-mails & call colleges for a visit. Its matter of your career so just relying on promotional brochures& websites it’s not just enough. Communicate with current students, you can use social media for this purpose. Check for college placements.

4. Potential list: After creating all the info for your research, Pick top 10 as per your short listing and not on results that come on internet for top 10. Get sensible.

Application:

1. Start: Once you’ve received results of your competition exams start applying to different colleges. There are many colleges that accept AIEEE score but have different counselling sessions , keep in mind you don’t miss out on those.

2. Documents: There are many documents other than mark sheets like character certificate, domicile certificate, migration certificate that can result into rejection of application if not provided on time. Therefore please collect & file your documents as soon as you start with applications.

3. Fee: Make sure you have financially planned for your education expenses. Bank loan formalities can be sometimes tricky so please check them carefully.

4. Meeting deadlines: Many colleges & universities provide scholarships on first come first serve & rewards for timely submission. So please be in time for application not just for rewards but to grab seat on time.

A little research & responsiveness can lead you into an engineering college of your choice. So please make a decision responsibly.I did my engineering in computer science so you can post your queries in comments on engineering in India or for engineering college in Punjab.
